The members of the MVVC participated in another interest survey in 2001. The MVVC has conducted two member interest surveys, the first in 1997. In our original survey, we not only questioned members on their likes and dislikes about our club, we also posed the question about our then Trophy Based show. The idea was--would people be willing to deviate from the traditional awards car show format and take on a new Festival theme. The idea was well received by our membership and we now have a very popular show based on this change.
In 2001, we conducted another survey to again see how the club was doing, and to again take the pulse of our membership. The report to the membership is as follows:
The Questionaire:
Our 2001 club survey turned out to be another success, with a total of sixty six responses, or a 23% repose rate. There were some similarities with our 1996 survey, for instance, about 25% of our members maintain membership with our national club, the Vintage Volkswagen Club of America.
Great feedback was given regarding the most favored aspects of the club, as well as some dislikes.
Without a doubt, the newsletter and the annual festival are the most important aspects of the club. Social events rank right up there, as well as driving events and other VW shows. Curiously, other open class car shows did not fair as well. Worthy of note is the increasing interest in the MVVC web site. This statistic has risen since our last survey. The Web is an important resource that we must begin to use more. Our new club software, with some new ideas for using the internet as a larger club resource are being worked-on currently.
Some interesting information was also gained about our annual festival. Very popular are the vintage and air-cooled cars. Conversely, interest in water-cooled cars was in fact very low, the lowest interest rating of any question asked on the survey. This is an important question for us to consider, as it gives us clear direction for the theme of our club and future directions for the MVVC Festival.
Unfortunately, it does not look like we are doing a very good job on our food and entertainment. It is good to ask these questions every once in a while, so that we can see the things that need to be corrected and redirected within the club and its activities! We’re working on some ideas to improve both food and music for the coming year.
Not included in the graphics is the data on the club newsletter. We are working on new ideas to re-spark this club resource.. Of interest to members was information on club events, calendar and general club information. Next in line of interest were technical articles and For Sales/ Want Ads. Of little to no interest were new VW information and commercial ads.
What we are interested in doing is focusing the attention of the club on things of the most interest to the membership. We could certainly bolster the revenue for the club by allowing commercial advertisements in the newsletter and on the web site. But the interest is not there. We can find other ways to meet our objective and a lot of ideas are brewing—as you are beginning to see.
But the feeling you get from all the above information is that we are a social club. VWs are the theme, but the people behind the cars (or in the cars, or under the cars) are the primary interest!
